I've often wondered if the roots of the Black Walnut could be used in woodworking.I have seen BW trunks with huge diameters and wondered how much usable wood is underground.Anyone have any ideas?

Yes. I don't think they have an especially deep root system but the wood at the base of the trunk is good. One example is claro walnut. It's the wood from the graft line between English walnut trees on black walnut root stocks. Think "fancy gun stock" in some cases.
There would be a lot of good wood there for small projects, I imagine.

My folks had a butternut (closely related to walnut) removed from their front lawn and when the stump was pulled, there were several sizable roots.
