So over the weekend I was asked by the local state park, for the second year in a row, to put on a wood carving program. Turning kids and adult beginners loose with sharp knives I felt was not such a good idea, so I chose to teach the basics of carving a face on a sweet potato with a plastic knife sharpened with a Dremel. Based on the response, we ran out of sweet potatoes, I think it was a success.

The park also runs a program to make your own walking stick. We had several of our sticks on display and hopefully some of the folks that attended the program will get bit by the stickmaking bug.

I remember when dad showed my brother, sister, and I how to carve faces on potatoes when we were young. When we were done with the face we'd let them dry out and become wrinkled old men.

Looks like everyone had fun. Sweet potatoes and plastic knives were a good idea. Better to run out of potatoes than to run out of bandaids instead.
