I try to remember to set the tools I am using down so they would not roll around and fall of the work surface. Also to prevent bang the cutting edge with another toll or a finger. It is not a real issue now that I have the tool catty you have seen in other post. But before I made that I would set them on the bench or table I was working at. Using a rubber place mat they sell to use on boats so the dishes will not move around when the boat rolling. You can buy the same thing in rolls for lining tool drawers. Knives will move around easier with their shape than palm tools. I used a binder clip and a piece of leather. to hold the knife up right and protect the blade.

Speaking of corks, I've got quite a collection. Although I don't imbibe, my wife does. Anyway, I took a hacksaw blade and shoved one end into a cork, shaped and sharpened the other end and pushed it into another cork. I keep it in a bag I always have hanging on my walker.
