I like recycling and reuse.
I bought this cheaply and it is supposedly Ebony, it has a finish over a very dense tropical yellow hardwood-no idea of age and a wooden pad nailed or screwed to bottom part

I had Ideas of a stencil in silver and alpine spike with rubber so I can use it to watch my son play rugby and a formal use as well.
Currently the handle is removable, I like the shape so likely keeping it with a ferrule or collar perhaps

It's in beautiful condition and I'm considering tasteful modifications, I don't want to bolt a load of bling on it particularly.

I'm guessing some sort of varnish so don't want to have a reaction to other paints etc

Comments and ideas most welcome.

Regards Dan

Looks like a very serviceable cane as it is, except for the tip. Definitely could use something more protective.

You like the handle which is the one part I would probably change if I were to make any changes.

Hi I've tried to get some close up pictures to show the wood grain and what I believe to be superficial things it's far more presentable than my pictures would indicate.

I did wonder if LIGNUM VITAE wood as it is heavy.
I'd like this on it if I could source similar domestically with a more domed point.

I did order the smaller domed alpine spikes attached- but the high shine nickel mor my liking and threaded retainer for rubber ferrule.

I've a black tie dinner coming up and my current walking stick looks like a hiking pole, leaning towards understated gentlemen's dress cane.

That would be a really cool cane for black tie, very elegant. If it’s very heavy it might indeed be Lignum of some kind.
Treeline offers some nice ferrules. and a ferrule would help prevent any mor splitting where your handle connects to the shank.

Great minds think alike, sadly import to uk would be expensive, but I have locally sourced ferrule on order. 👍

The handle has a coarse 10-12 mm length thread into main stick, I hope to bond with epoxy the whole lot.

I did wonder if shellac is the finish and if Beeswax and wood oil product suitable to polish it?

🙂Looking forward to post arriving and getting started.
My first effort. The thread between handle and main stick, had to drill out thread as it isn't central until tight.

I have more surface area and support with ferrule.
It is ebony and had a different wood as foot.
The makers had filled a thin slither with another wood.
It is black ebony wood & button shellac which I have wiped down with wood silk / Beeswax polish.
My relative calls it a swagger or pimp stick, I call it a bit of fun.
Parts from Keith Pickering maker of hand carved walking sticks in wood who has a traditional speed of delivery service and parts were nice quality. The stickman does mention alpine spike quality and for the cost it is OK.
