again, guys, I'm faced with this issue . . . I need to cut away a smaller branch from a sturdy upright portion in the cane-making process.

And here's the deal - when I cut the smaller existing branch away I'm left with a STRAIGHT (because of the saw) cut vs the round tapered main section.

Yes...I'll clear that lichen away first.

Any good ideas/suggestions on how you guys do that to make your FAB walking sticks/canes?

This is the narrow end of the cane - so it needs to be GONE.

Thanx

Cut it off slightly proud, carve it back rounded and then sand it smooth. If the cane has a number of side branches scattered over it, I leave them proud and rounded and smooth to show character.

Agree, cut off leaving slightly proud then rasp, file, carve it down to the round of the stick. If you are going to remove bark it will be easier to give a good sand down to make it blend withe the stick.

When using shanks from hawthorn, Blackthorn and Dog Rose ,cleaning the shank is a time consuming job as each thorn, prickle has to be removed and blended into shank without damaging the adjacent bark as I predominantly leave bark on.
