Here's a cane I completed a few days ago. The handle on this on is flowering cherry that I picked up from a pile of trimmings landscapers left next to the street for people to take a couple years ago.







The collar is raintree wood with some more of the cherry and the shank is alder with some really interesting (to me anyway) bark.

I just wanted to show an example of what can be done with free wood from what some people would think is an unlikely source.

The handle and collar are gorgeous. For me, though, the shank is what really makes that particular cane a stand out. Almost like a long uncut ruby. Super work, Rodney.

Super looking cane! I once put my hand around that type of handle (they call it a derby dont they) and it was amazingly comfortable.

Either Derby or Fritz. Derbies tend to have a curl at the ends. Fritz canes tend to be a little straighter, Both have that dip then rise at the front. From what I've seen there's room for interpretation on both. This is probably more of a Fritz. The Fritz/Derby style canes are comfortable but I still prefer the Cardigan style more.

Here's another Fritz from the same flowering cherry. These pieces have some nice spalting in them but I actually like the first cane I showed you guys better.







The collars are holly and pacific madrone burl. I'm still not sure what wood the shank is.

Nice work! I love that first photo. I would not have thought that adding wood on to the handle that way (the extra piece of cherry) would have turned out so well.

I have stopped by the tree trimmers truck on several occasions and handed out my cell number. Now if the guys have some interesting wood they give me a call before throwing it into the chipper. One man's trash is another man's walking stick

Awesome. A lot of wood turners make friends with tree trimmers too. They'll generally give them something they've made to get them interested.

It never hurts to ask. The worst that happens is they say no.
