Giving myself away . . .

3817 Views 19 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Rodney
I've made this appeal here previously and again feel the need to re-emphasize this issue. At age 82 I can honestly say almost nothing brings me more joy than giving away stuff - stuff I no longer want or more importantly things made in my little workshop.

As an aside and an example, I was recently interviewed by a 9th grade English teacher - I told those kids I hope they soon discover the joy of giving themselves away and I meant it. I mentioned I was delighted at age 70 to finally find what I was born to do - volunteer at a hospital (7 years, 1500+ hours) - and I meant that.

But now, it's hand made canes - and other stuff - which I'm going to attempt to show and explain.

During April I made two canes - #100 - my current house cane and #101 - pool cue...the EASIEST cane ever!

Then, since I offered, one of our grandsons reduced my cane inventory, taking six, as shown.

I'm a patriotic kinda guy - I fly the American flag every day the weather allows, year round. Last June I made the first (of eight) Betsy Ross Revolutionary Flags - and given all but ours away. Here's three completed in April.

And this week I made a bench so our grandson doesn't have to drill any holes in the siding and can display their flag on the front porch.

So let me assure you guys that although I've not been mass-producing hand-made canes, I've kept busy.

And giving stuff away.

Try it!

I spite of my best efforts I still am not receiving the email notifications and sincerely hope someone here can do something about it.

Thanks

ps - I'd be willing to copy/paste all of my settings here - page by page - if that would help. PLEASE advise.
This precious little almost 4 year old great-granddaughter had a blast playing with those wood blocks one day this past week (until her almost 2 year old sister kicked them into the next county) - so since their co-birthday celebrations are coming up I made more - shown in the blue sandbox pail. We'll keep the orange pail of wood blocks here.

Awesome blocks! I think simple toys like that are the best.

What a great picture! That is a look of just pure innocent joy! I have a feeling you had the same look on your face watching her play! By the way. To this day I can't walk by a pile of blocks, Lincoln logs or Lego bricks without getting an almost uncontrollable urge to run over and build something!

Toys that let imagination run wild, can't beat them far better than all the electronic gizmo's, enjoy your family and keep well.

One of my current FAV shows is Mountain Men - and this past week Eustace - one of my favs - said something about wishing more parents were making blocks for their kids these days.

I have now made these blocks for all of our grandchildren and now their children.

THAT is fun.

ps - I STILL am not receiving email notifications - ratz!
Would I dare post this here? Yesterday afternoon was the combo BD party for Noelle (4) and Grace (2) - so along with other things (including a bubble machine) we took those blocks.

They had already opened Disney movies, misc battery operated games, etc., but when Miss Noelle found those blocks she took them over into the corner, all alone, and began building things. Her parents had to remind her she still had gifts to open.

THAT brought this old geezer great joy.
Blocks are great gifts. Bought 3 sets for my grandson's 2nd birthday. Was somewhat surprised at the cost. The wood was better than what i had as a kid, which I think were mostly pine. Still, I never had enough.

I just returned from a long family reunion. Tired out and far behind on volunteer commitments. Within the next couple of days, I'll check your profile settings to the extent that I can, and see whether I notice anything amiss. If not, I'll notify the owner of the website. Sorry you've not been receiving notifications.

I'm a newby compared to you, but I've now made walking sticks for all my immediate family and some extended family. I've made a number for aging Vietnam veterans, and working on a few more right now. You're very correct, it's fun to keep on making them and gift them to friends and family who look at them as heirlooms.

Still working on giving away all my geological library. About half went to the University of Tulsa's geology department, and a good number to grad students, but still a lot of books remain in the attic that I don't want my kids to throw in the dumpster when I kick the bucket. ;-)

I did report this to the site developer. I haven't received a response either. Hopefully he's just on a family vacation. He means well, I suspect that he doesn't make a dime off of this site. My understanding was that he built this for his father who was interested in the topic.

PROBLEM resolved - thank YOU
Two more canes gifted during June - one mailed as a surprise to Dallas, TX for a friend of 60+ yrs and the other to the uncle of a friend who lives in Minn. Both of those were first-timers - first for those states, that is.

I enjoy giving myself away.

Do you?

ps - God Bless America, land that I love.

Two more beauties! I was planning on just being lazy today but that sugar maple is making want to check out a few wood piles I've seen around the neighborhood.

Batakali: Sounds like a good plan for the day.

I just delivered my first cane made as a gift yesterday. Our friend loved it. I'm hoping to hear how her dad likes it when he gets it.

I've never once regretted giving a gift.
