Hello.....I've been lurking on the site for about a year. I made my 1st stick/staff about 12 yrs ago, the one on the left of the picture. The sticks are arranged in the order of production. I've given away many and kept the ones that are "special" to me. As you can see I've progressed to shillelaghs. The 2 on the right are still works in progress. One is oak, the one on the end is maple. The thinner ones are made of dogwood and the little short is a riding crop. The 1st bark covered shillelagh is yellow poplar. Yes gdenby....the oak is showing its stubborn side. The ball is the root has also has small pebble encased which has become visible after belt sanding. I'm inclined to not remove it at this point. I cut this stick last Dec but was afraid to wait too long to do some preliminary shaping before it's fully seasoned. As with most pieces I make I put a rubber end on and carry them around a bit to make sure it feels right in my hand and keep at it until I'm satisfied. Batakali......I've been using 2 5/8" brads w/head nailed thru the leather...and I cover the brads with 2.... 1/2" decorative "thumb tax" from the local Lowe's. Thanks for the welcome and comments from all.
