Hello gents (and any ladies out there).

I've been admiring all of your handiwork for a few months and I'm quite impressed! Your discussions and knowledge on this forum have given me some inspiration to try my hand on a few projects. My father was quite good at wood carving later in life. I was able to dust off his old tools and get busy. Here are my most recent projects.

Human body Jaw Wood Gesture Artifact
Hand Arm Sculpture Jaw Wood
Wood Natural material Hardwood Tool Lumber
Wood Brickwork Brick Wall Rectangle
Wood Natural material Wood stain Hardwood Musical instrument

Hello FishGuy! Glad you jumped in. Just getting started you have done a good job on your sticks. Check your area.. there may be a carving club or group in driving distance. Great place to learn and get to know other carvers and stick maker. Nice fish! When I can't carve I try to put a fly rod in my hand. If you cant catch them you can carve them.

RandyL476, both canes are a mish-mash of different woods. For the basic cane, the handle is ash, shaft is maple and the center piece is oak. The fish (pike) cane handle is ash and the shaft is maple.

For years as we'd drive along roads new to us, I'd be looking for fishing holes...for I LOVED to fish. One of the best vacations we took was driving 2-lane roads along Lake Michigan stopping almost every few feet to fish another stream.

I now look for limbs and sticks out at the road edge and have managed to "salvage" quit a few before the chopper came along.

I feel good about teaching all six of our grandchildren to fish - most of them are parents now.

I'd now like to teach cane-making to one or two of them.

WELCOME FishGuy

You'll fit right in.

your carving looks pretty good for starter pretty sure you will find more subject matter to carve on your shanks; Fish are always popular and the shape lends itself to handles very well.

welcome to the site
