My name is Sean and I'm glad I found the site! I never before thought about a walking stick forum even though I use other forums for the hobbies I have, I stumbled on it when I was searching for American Hornbeam information for a stick I'm currently working on. I've been making walking sticks for freinds and myself for several years. I sometimes make them for charity and most people are thrilled t get one, even the most simple ones.

I'm looking forward to seeing other's work and learning new techniques and ideas - as well as sharing some that I've come up with -

Hi, Sean, and welcome.

I've done one stick from hornbeam. Very hard, tight grain. Was very white to start, but after a time it shifts color to a pale tan. I think it would take fine detail carving. Myself, I liked how very smooth the wood could be made with fine sanding (up to 1800 grit) and so just carved a simple smooth grip.

Was hard to finish, because nothing penetrated the wood very well. In the end, I coated it w. teak oil, which has similar water resistance to tung, but is thinner and soaks into dense woods better.

I have a couple pieces of hop hornbeam, which is easier to find. I hope it is similar to hornbeam, tho' at the least, it looks a little darker.
