Long time walker, first time carver. I have a few walking sticks, long ones for really uneven terrain and shorter ones for level terrain. Always wanted to learn carving...I can wittle, so I guess I got a start in my learning process. Happy walking to all!

Hi, and welcome. As far as carving goes, keep your edges sharp, and consider getting a carving glove of finger protection. Lots of good stick wood is harder than often used by carvers, and its easy to push too hard.

You are oh, so right about stick wood,(at least the woods I choose), vs. carving wood, where I see a lot of basswood. The carving glove is a great idea, I do wear gloves, (not always though), to cut down on blisters. developing. Thank you for the reminder gdenby, I should wear protection ALL the time.

Welcome to the forum and good luck with your carving endeavors. You'll get great answers so don't hesitate to ask questions. You'll probably be able to give some of us a lot of suggestions regarding sticks.
