Hi folks! Just got back from harvesting some sticks and figured I'd try to find a related site. So glad I did! I've been making sticks as a hobby for ten years or so but in the past five I got into it fairly hard-core. My main interest is shillelaghs and other knob sticks but lately I've been trying some thumb sticks. I try to go as "traditional" as possible. No power tools,no varnish, just saws, rasps, oil and lots of sandpaper! Anyway.. that's about it for me, looking forward to any tips or comments from people and mabye I can share some things I've learned as well. Later!

Mostly some really nice ash suckers. It grows a nearly perfect root ball around here. Got a few maple and hazel as well, and one that I'm not sure of, lilac maybe. I love natural thumb sticks but Lord is hard to find that perfect Y!

I always keep my eyes open for that y myself not easy to fid that's why a lot of people carve there own ,They look good carved from water buffalo horn or wood but a good natural shank with that y already there is a bonus to find. There are loads of patterns for the carved y but think a lot of them are over the top. favourite one is from buffalo horn without any fancy shape to it.

Welcome Batakali. Looking forward to seeing some of your work.

Waiting on the weather to break around here to get out and prep a few sticks in the back yard. Aggressive sanding in my garage leaves too much dust on everything.

Welcome to the forum. This is absolutely the place to be if you're into walking sticks and canes. Lots and lots of information available and great people too.
