I can't seem to stop collecting...

This was a dead tree in my woods, another tree had fallen in a recent storm and broke this one at the base. I'm pretty sure I'm getting in trouble when the wife gets home and sees that against the house.

Is there any issues with reducing the diameter of the base of this for making a walking or hiking stick? I'd love to use as much of this as possible, but it's a little large to be comfortable at that point.

Shouldn't be an issue. In fact, if the tree has been dead a while and has started to rot, taking some off might get you down to more stable wood. I had a similar situation with a piece of standing dead cherry a while back.

Although, looking closer at the pic, kind of looks dark in the center which might be rot as well. Hard to tell from here in Maine.

You ought to find some salvage in this one! Maybe even two! (y)
