I have this Bios D'Arc (Osage Orange) stick that I have been curing for about 5 years and I want to make a cane from it. I want to carve the top into something such as a horse head, a skull, or something similar, but not too difficult.
Any suggestions?
The dimensions now are:
Overall Length 56". I plan to make the cane about 36" long.
The part at top is 5.5" X 2" diameter counting the .125" bark (which I plan to remove)
The dark center is much harder than the white outer wood and it measures 1.5" x 2" diameter. The outer white wood could be used or removed. Here are some photos of it.

This is the bottom of the big piece.
The black is burnt from the saw blade burning it,
but you can see the dark & white wood.
My skill at carving is very limited, but here are three one piece canes I carved from Bois D'Arc:
