Also known as Styrax japonicus. This is a common temperate ornamental tree with white leaves, you all may have seen:

A recent snow brought down a young snowbell tree in the yard, it had grown on a slope and the roots didn't take deep. The trunk is around 3 inch diameter, rootstock intact. Saved 5 feet of it, now drying out for a few years.

I read this tree was used to make instruments and tools in Japan, has anyone ever worked with it? I'm hoping to thin it down when dry and try a stick or umbrella handle.

I don't think you're being ignored on purpose. I think it's more likely no one here has worked with the wood before.

If the Japanese use it for tools and instruments then I'm thinking it's worth using.
