Hello. New here. I've done a little carving over the years...just some miniatures, etc....nothing extravagant. I'm working on my first walking stick/cane....diamond willow wood.

I don't ask a lot of questions....but I do lurk and read. Open eyes and open ears are the best way to learn.

Looking forward to learning.

welcome! Lucky to have something like diamond willow to start with. One of the best things about this site is that there is always someone who will at least try to answer a question. I've found solid information on questions that I thought were totally random.

Hello,

I came across this site only today via a Pinterest link. I live in the South of England and I have been making sticks for several years. I am retired and I found this wonderful hobby purely by chance. My wife brought home a couple of sticks from our local church Christmas fair. When I saw them my first reaction was "I can do better than that!" So after a little research, and buying the book 'Stickmaking: A Complete Course by Andrew Jones and Clive George, my stickmaking began. I collect the shanks from my local woodland, with the owner's permission of course. I fashion the handles from offcuts and other pieces of appropriate timber, and occasionally antler.

It is a satisfying and absorbing hobby which I practice mainly in the winter months when it is too wet, cold or dark to venture outside.
