I stumbled across this walking the dog one day last year. Thought it would make a nice cane.

No idea what type of wood it is. I just thought it was really cool that it grew naturally into that U shape.

Its dried out now and ready for some sanding, but I haven't quite decided how to shape the hand grip. I'm not sure if its better to leave both sides of the U the way it is or trim down one (or both) sides.

This would be my first cane so some input from the cane experts would be greatly appreciated.

Just cut a piece of oval leather, attach two pieces of tubing, find some rocks or marbles... Wait sorry wrong forum.

All kidding aside you have some options with that piece. I have quite a bit of Maple on hand that grows like that and looks same.
