I just finished this one today. Oregon White Oak with a leather wra and wrist strap.

I used a baseball stitch on this one. I left the stick and handle as natural as I could. There was a little bit of filing and sanding at the joint to blend the two pieces together and I sanded it just enough so it wouldn't catch on anything.

It only has a few coats of oil on it to protect it, too much gloss wouldn't look right in my opinion.

Do you glue the leather in place to keep it from slipping?

Yes. I used contact cement. It makes things much easier to work with when the leather isn't moving around on you.
