I've been thinking about getting a draw knife to pell the bark off the sticks I use for canes an walking sticks don't want one too big not lime I'm going to be pelling logs but I've found a Flexcut 3" straight draw knife is that to small or I need one bigger.

The one I just got has an eight inch cutting edge on it and I find it very handy. I can use different sections of the blade as I move about the piece and it gives me good leverage for shaving off knots and limb nubs.

Here's a link to what looks like a very nice tool that should last a lifetime: http://www.diefenbacher.com/Drawknives.htm

The Stubai is the one I was going to buy before I found the one I got locally. The Two Cherries small 5 1/2" would be my second choice but it's nearly twice the price.

Take a look before you decide. My objection to the Flexcut is that it is stamped rather than forged and I think 3" would be too small, but that's just my personal preference.

I would go for a slightly larger one it will make it more versatile .you will need a bench of some kind I use the draw knife for shapping wood ,its a pretty handy tool.

mine is about 5"its the only flexi tooli have but its not bad. I do think rodnog is right about it being shaped rather than forged I perssonally wouldnt purchase flexi tools myself there overpriced here

There's lots of ways to hold a stick for shaving, the shaving horse being a very good way, including clamping it to a bench top or holding it in a vise. I have a great set of plans for one of the nicest shaving horses I have seen, I just haven't had a chance to build it yet. This is how I'm doing it for now:

PS. I'm happy to share the plans if anyone wants them
