I have both #2 pencils and wax markers sitting around. Some of the woods I try to mark are hard enough and slippery enough that pencils don't work.

In some cases, I just lay the straight edge on the wood, and use it as a guide to start the saw cut. I use this saw a lot.

The saw on one side has 20 tpi, I think, and the other, 32. The blade is very flexible but the teeth are holding up pretty well. Typically, I switch back and forth between the sides. Finer cut first, then more coarse to open up the cut. Its sharp enough that it takes almost no effort.
