Thank you one and all.
At times these sticks need "extensions" - they simply are not long enough - yet very salvageable - to be used for a cane. So I simply attach with a dowel screw and wood glue another piece. But that requires some clean/clear cuts with my fine tooth draw saw.
To accomplish that I have found it's best to lay the two pieces side-by-side on my work bench and using a T-square make a cut line across both pieces. Doing that on raw wood, some of it with a good underbark layer remaining is not always easy to see to make those cuts.
I will prob continue using the #2 pencils.
