I began yesterday attempting to remove the bark from this potential cane shank and it's tough. The bark is paper thin but very "tight" - there are distinguishing vertical stripes and "dots" or "specks" from end-to-end and very sturdy, not a wobble in it anywhere.

I'm not even certain when or where I got this stick - whether it's native to TN or IL - so I'm really stuck.

IF all else fails I'm naming it a silver maple - and 20 years from now, who will know the difference, right?

Any suggestions?

Looked around, and what it most seems to resemble is Striped Maple, aka snake bark, or moosewood. But then I found a range map, and it isn't native to either IL or TN. I did find some silver maple branches that look a little like that, so maybe.

I was looking over my stock yesterday. I didn't bother to ID much when I started. I've got maybe a dozen sticks debarked, and have only the vaguest idea what some might be. As long as the wood is sturdy, and the grip feels good in my hand, I'm happy.
