In many of the book on carving they offer measurement in their directions. Or if you are using measurements of a object a great tool to have is are a sliding caliper. I use one on almost every carving I do. I use it to insure I am doing my eyes the same sizes or that they are equal distance, width of the nose or mouth and so on.
