Nice piece.looks. like a fishermans priest,.dont tell me its loaded with a colt 45, if its not what have you loaded it with?

Its come up well with the danish oil.It looks like something the press gangs would use to get sailors to man the ships during the 1700`s

It's loaded with lead. Yes the Danish Oil did a nice job.
"Loaded with lead" OUCH!

What does that puppy weigh?

It's not that heavy -- I didn't put that much in it!
By the Way -- I like the Danish Oil, it was the first time that I've really used it as a finish! The directions say that you can coat it with a poly after it has dried 72hours -- but I like the way it looks now.
I think it looks good and it creates a talking peice when hung on the wall . Thast the advantage of having a lathe the decorative finish you can get by combining wood is stunning and have always loved it

I like danish oil think that absorbs in to the wood well ,but does need more then one coat.

Not bad for knocking it up in the afternoon eh

The bark on the hazel and chestnut shanks come up really well with it and does offer some protection but the bark gives is the best protection a natural finish .

The work has made me look up truncheon and tipstave over the ages ,some of them fetch a princley sum and are very collectable even reproduction ones

It has a long history

makes me wish for a lathe but no room , but would a love a small one , as oftern could use one for making bits and pieces for the stickmaking ,such as bowler hats etc.

It is a very nice piece Rad. I thought it would be heavy with the added lead. I have a couple bonkers I have made from staffs I have broken while fabricating,(couldn't bear to burn them) I'll have to toy around with adding some lead for a little heft!

I have never used Danish Oil, I have seen it on the shelf at the big box stores, what is it made from?
I have no idea what danish oil is made from hopefully someone will know

Its recomended that the 1st coat of the oil is diluted with white spirit 1 part danish oil 4 parts white spirit .it helps deep penatration its dries in 8hours then give a couple more coats .it gives a low luster
