Greetings all.Just cleared my son's over grown backyard.Got some 3 to 5 inch diameter Sumac branches and a Grapevine base a little bigger than a softball with a branch about 3 inches in diameter.Could they be suitable for making cane handles.I know sumac is semi hard .The pith does not look soft.I know nothing about the grape. It looks hard and is quite heavy.Any Thoughts?

Hey Mark Nine, welcome aboard! I've never tried sumac, but I've seen pictures of canes made from it. Only way to know for sure is to let it season and try making one. I've turned green staghorn sumac on my lathe years ago and found it very sticky. Never tried a seasoned piece, though.
As for grape vine, basically the same advice: let it season and try it. I've seen canes made of vine but I can't recall if any were grape vine.

Thanks dww2.Will certainly follow up with your recommendations.
I made a walking stick out of grapevine and sassafras that has a heavy twist in it. The grapevine is pretty hard but it did crack but I filled the crack with epoxy, looks pretty good.
