Traditional Portuguese Staff-Fighting systems and methods are collectively known as 'Jogo do Pau'.

In many societies throughout history, folk have developed combat practices with everyday work tools.

In Portugal the people developed a combat system using as a weapon the walking stick that accompanied the shepherds and peasants.

The origins of this martial art are uncertain, but its purpose was mainly self-defense.

It was also used to settle accounts, disputes and questions of honor among individuals, families and even villages.

This system came to be known by the name of Jogo do Pau (stick game).

Already well within century XX, events with the game of the stick were still frequent by whole Portugal, with emphasis to the north of the country, in fairs and pilgrimages.

Sometimes whole villages were involved in brawls, sometimes the fighting was individual, or one player against several.
