I have just come across this technique and seems to havea lot potential for texturing carved wood particularly for snakes etc
You just press a blunt tool into the wood making a depression in it then sand the wood back nearly to the depressions you made ,then steam it
It lifts the wood you pressed down giving a snake skin texture
