View and despair! Well, maybe not...

Always on the lookout for inspiration and example, I came across the work of David Esterly. Not a stick maker, but a carver extraordinaire.

See this site. !!! Scroll down about 5 images to see examples of what he was able to do w. various woods, before deciding that they were too hard and that he would return to using lime (aka basswood, linden.)

Wait, what a quitter. When I'm out on the porch gashing some oak, I realize that even Mr. Easterly wouldn't attempt such a heroic task.

I've long ago come to terms with my utter mediocrity. At best.

Most of the time I'm shooting for solid incompetence.

I always like viewing other's works. Thanks for sharing. I like to say that we are all capable of great work, we may not do it as fast, or as easily, but we are capable. It boils down to patience, perserverance and a strop :)

LOL,,,,those have to be the most profound statements I've heard in a long time. I've said I'm 2 qts shy of empty of any talent whatsoever.

I to look for inspration came across a book called carving gargoyles by Shawn Cipa well worth looking at obtianed it on amazon

so impressed with it even a step by step details using photo so anyone unsure how to tackle it should find it useful. Its always useful to look at others work

impresse by it i decided to tackle a project heres where i am to date after drawing and making templates had to scale it down a bit and modify some of it so heres the 1st stage i am at.

The one i am carving is designed to be a water spouting gargolyle and design to be made on a 14x 6" x4 piece of lime wood

there are plans for it i just modified them to suit a cane topper so its about 6" tall it may well be to tall to fit on a hiking pole but i am doing it anyway

A long way to go yet just the shape and basic wing shape about sorted
