What Is It?

I was taking a walk through my woods and passed by a tree I must have passed a hundred times before and never noticed.

I've never seen another like it -- notice the deep furrows of bark -- anyone have an idea what it is? The leaves aren't out yet, that would probably help! The branches that come of the tree are smooth.

Thats wierd, never seen anything like it? thought it may be canker but its to strange for that ? would be interested to find out what caused it? Could the tree be dead?

No -- it's a live tree! I think that whatever kind it is that the bark is "normal"
The only tree I know of in my area that has bark anything like that is hackberry. I have a sapling section curing now in my garage.

I Googled around, and found this. Looks a lot alike to me.
You may be right Gdenby! I'm anxious to see the leaves!
Didn't even know I had any of that stuff. Thought it was something you guys had down in the deep south!
