More wonderful work. Member cobalt has mentioned that leaving the bark on hazel is standard. Where I live, there is no bark even close in terms of pattern and smoothness, except on a few shrubs that are too small for stick making.

how did you form that snake to fit the shank?

Is it horn? I have cut and shaped rams horn initials to fit a shank but this is far more complicated and time consuming .

a work of art.. in shape and texture .

Hi Cobolt

Snake & Head all one piece (Not allow to "stick bits on in competitions") When bulking horn long piece retained for snake this shaped heated & bent round shank then burnt (pyrograh) & painted. i am thinking of doing another one so will take stage photos

its pretty dam good

photo of the next would be great in stages that I will look forward to do , never seen it done

I haven't yet got the tools to bulk horn but it is something I want to do
