This is a 1"diameter walnut cane I got from Smoky Mountain woodcarvers.
I textured the grip.I will cut in and carve the leaves and texture around them.
Then sand the whole cane down. I will stain the grip with a mahogany or ebony
stain. Or I may mix the two. Then refinish the cane with a marine grade tung oil.

Looks like its going to be another nice job.

Is that a template your using?, i have heard of them ,never used them yet i understand there pretty good

You always have a very good standard of work and lots of attention to detail so post the pics during progression and the finish if you would please

Hi cobalt,
The leaves are traced on to a self adhesive film like sheet. I cut the leave out pull off the back put them on the stick. I cut though the thin material fallowing outline on the sheet then shape and detail the leaves. Work well for relief type carving .

I like the idea of using a template and hoping to try it using some celtic design or viking art,

This forum is excellent for inspring people and sharing information , just wish the dam decorating and garden where finished so i can get back to what i want to do.

I have a 6"x18" x4ft piece of walnut just been haging on to it for use when the time comes i am tempted to do a large type ships figure head but have so many projects in mind i need to catch up with them.

but keep carving and sending pics.

Did you finish the walnut cane ? or did i miss it?
No I haven't completed it yet. I had a little comition work come up. I have some people who redo old furniture and get me to carve missing peices sometimes. So all my projects got shelved. Then last week I did not get any thing done in the shop. Hopeing to get back to this stick and the eagle this comming week.

Well the modification has had a modification. I was going to do some leaves on this cane. But A friend commissioned a cane for his grandmother. She is a big fan or the Dogwood flowers. Will finish with spar urethane.
